The Honourable John A. McMunagle, a sole practitioner in Ottawa, is appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario (Ottawa) to replace Madam Justice M. Métivier, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of April 4, 2010.
Mr. Justice McMunagle received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Carleton University in 1982 and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Queen's University in 1985. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1987.
Mr. Justice McMunagle has been a sole practitioner since 2008. He practised with McCann Law Offices (2002-2008) and was a sole practitioner (1992-2002). He has been a prosecutor for the Law Society of Upper Canada since 2004; a member of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves, Judge Advocate General since 1999; standing part-time prosecutor for Elections Canada (1992-2007); part-time assistant Crown Attorney for the Ministry of the Attorney General (1993-1997). He also practised with Wakefield & McMunagle (1989-1992) and Karam, Greenspon (1985-1989). His main area of practise was criminal defence trial litigation.
Mr. Justice McMunagle was an instructor for the Law Society of Upper Canada for the Bar Admission Course and sessional lecturer at Carleton University. He is member of numerous associations, including the Canadian Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers, the Canadian Criminal Justice Association and life member of the Elizabeth Fry Society. He is also the author of several publications.
