The Honourable Justice Jonathan Brunet

Justice Jonathan Brunet was called to the Bar in 1990 and joined the federal Department of Justice as counsel in civil litigation and immigration and refugee law in Toronto. In 1992, he was counsel for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ottawa. Since 1993, he has been an assistant Crown attorney for Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General with the exception of a three-year secondment to the federal Department of Justice. Justice Brunet has taught criminal law and procedure in French and English at the University of Ottawa since 1997, and taught criminal law at Carleton University. He has authored and co-authored four texts dealing with criminal law issues and has assisted the National Judicial Institute in setting up bail practice training for justices of the peace. He has been a board member of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario East-Champlain district and of the Canada-Ethiopia Coalition for Aids Prevention and Education in Ottawa. Chief Justice Annemarie E. Bonkalo has assigned Justice Brunet to preside in Cornwall.

 

 

Jonathan Brunet, B.A., LL.B., a été appelé au barreau de l'Ontario en 1990 après avoir fait sa cléricature auprès du juge en chef Frank Iacobucci (tel qu'il l'était) de la Cour d'appel fédérale.  Me Brunet a ensuite travaillé au ministère de la Justice à Toronto et aux Affaires étrangères à Ottawa avant de se joindre au bureau du procureur de la couronne en 1993.  Depuis 1993, il travaille comme procureur adjoint de la couronne dans le bureau du procureur de la couronne à Ottawa à part d'une période de trois ans où il a travaillé comme procureur de la couronne fédérale. 

Depuis 1997 Me Brunet enseigne dans le domaine de droit criminel à la faculté de droit à l'Université d'Ottawa.  Il a aussi enseigné à l'Université Carleton à Ottawa et au cours d'admission au barreau de l'Ontario.  Il est l'auteur, éditeur ou co-auteur de plusieurs textes dans le domaine criminel, à savoir :  The Annotated Firearms Act and Related Legislation, LexisNexis/Butterworths, 1999, 2006, 2009;Firearms, Weapons and Dangerous Goods, Halsbury's Laws of Canada, LexisNexis/Butterworths, 2009;Victims of Crime, Halsbury's Laws of Canada, LexisNexis/Butterworths, 2010; etDrugs and Controlled Substances, Halsbury's Laws of Canada, LexisNexis/Butterworths, 2010.

Commentary:

    Justice Jonathan Brunet appears to be an ideal candidate according to the conservative mantra which makes him appear as a judge who will do the government's bidding, and make politically correct decisions rather than legal decisions. It remains to be seen how he uses his judicial discretion.
