A Victorian man has been jailed for assault and sex offences against his family that date back 40 years.

Police have described the case as one of the worst of its kind.

The 62-year-old man pleaded guilty to 41 charges, including assaults, rape and indecent assaults.

The County Court heard the offences occurred in the 1960s and 1970s.

The offences include assaults on the man's first wife when she was pregnant and the day she gave birth.

The court heard he threw their two-year-old son against a wall when the woman told him not to hit her any more.

The prosecutor said the pair split up in the late '60s.

The man later raped and indecently assaulted his girlfriend's three children.

He has been sentenced to 10 years and five months jail with a non-parole period of six years and three months.
