Justice Minister Irwin Cotler nominated two Ontario female judges Tuesday to fill Supreme Court of Canada vacancies.
Louise Charron, an Ontario Court of Appeal justice and Madam Justice Rosalie Abella have been unveiled as the candidates.
Mr. Cotler also called for “greater openness” and Parliamentary input in announcing a new review process.
The vacancies were created in June when Louise Arbour left to become the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Frank Iacobucci retired from the court. Mr. Iacobucci was recently named interim president of the University of Toronto.
The appointments would bring the number of female top-court Justices to four of nine. More to come
