Shocked ... Jacqui Smith

DOMESTIC violence sets society back £23billion a year, shocking new figures showed yesterday.

The massive bill includes health care for battered victims, rehousing and legal expenses.

On top of those are social services, lost economic output and hidden pain and suffering.

Professor Sylvia Walby of the University of Leeds, who was commissioned by the Government to study the problem, believes the cost could be even HIGHER.

Deputy Women's Minister Jacqui Smith said: "We can no longer allow this abuse to continue."
