DECATUR, Ga. (CP) - Toronto Argonauts receiver Andre Rison was jailed Wednesday in DeKalb County for failure to pay child support.
Rison, 37, was sentenced to jail until he pays $127,000 US to a woman with whom he has two sons. A former NFL star who spent 12 seasons with Indianapolis, Atlanta, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Green Bay, Kansas City and Oakland, Rison signed with the Argos last summer. Rison, a five-time Pro Bowl selection who was MVP of the 1994 Pro Bowl, was sentenced to an additional 20 days in jail for violating a court order to pay $3,500-a-month child support for his 16-year-old and 18-year-old sons since August 2002.
The children's mother, Raycoa Handley, said in August that Rison has not seen or talked to his children in 2 1/2 years.
Rison last played in the NFL in 2000 with Oakland. He was suspended for four games in 2001 for a repeat violation of the league's substance abuse policy, and was out of football until he joined the Argonauts.
In five games with the Argos, he made 14 catches for 174 yards and a touchdown but did not play in the team's playoff games, including its 27-19 Grey Cup win over the B.C. Lions.
