BARRIE — A 40-year-old man has been charged with the kidnapping and murder of a 61-year-old Barrie doctor and the kidnapping of her 11-month-old granddaughter.

The charges follow a joint investigation by city and provincial police that began when Dr. Mimi Khonsari was found dead in May, police said today in a release.

Khonsari was last seen alive with her granddaughter at the beginning of the Victoria Day weekend.

Authorities believe the woman was taken from her home along with the infant.

She was found stabbed to death in a wooded area north of Barrie. The child was found unharmed in Khonsari's abandoned car.

Clare Spiers of Barrie is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of kidnapping.

Spiers was arrested at the Quinte Detention Centre, where he has been in custody on unrelated charges since June 23, police said.
