A British Columbia man who killed his daughter because he didn't approve of her relationship with her boyfriend has been sentenced to 16 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole.

Calling it a "selfish act of the highest order, beyond the comprehension of any reasonable person," B.C. Supreme Court Judge Catherine Wedge laid out Rajinder Atwal's terms of parole on Wednesday.

Atwal, 48, stabbed his 17-year-old daughter Amandeep in July 2003 while driving her from Vancouver to Prince George. The teenager had been living in Prince George with her boyfriend, Todd McIsaac.

Atwal automatically received a life sentence for second-degree murder, leaving only the terms of parole to be set.

The Kitimat man appeared near tears when the terms were announced, and his wife Kulwinder started to cry.
