Won't get fooled again

It was quite a convincing act by a woman who has shown a remarkable knack for fooling people.
Not once, but twice in the days leading up to her release from prison, schoolgirl killer Karla Homolka argued through her lawyers that she was frightened by the prospects of facing the news media after 12 years behind bars.
So scared was she, her legal team said, that they wanted the courts to slap restraints on the media to block us from looking for her once she was back on the streets for fear that someone bent on revenge might be able to track her down and do her harm.
Nice try, Karla. She probably even fooled some people. No real surprise there, though. Look how effective her "poor me" act was 12 years ago when she convinced the legal system that she was forced into the despicable acts that cost three beautiful young women their lives.
Too bad about those videotapes that showed the world that she was actually a willing -- even eager -- participant in the horrific crimes
.
So it probably should have come as no surprise when Homolka -- the self-professed private person who says she hates the limelight and is scared to death of the news media -- made a beeline directly from prison to the studios of Radio Canada, the French-language arm of CBC. (No comment, however, for English-language media, who Homolka claims have treated her unfairly.)
"It was a very difficult decision to make. I'm a private person. I don't like to speak about my feelings," said Homolka, who then went on to tell the interviewer she often cries and is filled with remorse for her black past. "I think of what I've done and then often I think I don't deserve to be happy because of this."
But the mask slipped just a little when Homolka was asked about the status of her relationship with convicted killer Jean-Paul Gerbet, reported to be her jailhouse lover, and whether she is still communicating with him.
"I am not prepared to talk about people I knew in prison ... I have lived through the whole media circus and I don't want the friends I had in jail to be subjected to that."
Certainly not Karla. Unless of course you're the ringmaster and the rest of us are ready to jump at the crack of your whip.
What an act. What a despicable, sickening act.
And another thing...
Prime Minister Paul Martin and his government owe answers to scores of
Canadian taxpayers who are being pushed to the financial wall by federal
regulations that punish them for phantom investment profits. A number of former
JDS Uniphase employees owe hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes on money
they never made. Martin promised help during last year's election campaign, but
nothing has been done. That's shoddy and unacceptable.
