An Ottawa police administrative staff sergeant was still under investigation yesterday after a single shot from his handgun was fired into his basement floor while he was out Saturday evening. Ottawa police Staff Sgt. Kevin McCaffery remains on active duty while east division detectives and professional standards investigators determine whether any criminal or Police Services Act charges should be laid. Police are still trying to determine who fired the gun. Police regulations stipulate the gun should have been unloaded and secured with a pistol-lock that keeps the trigger from being pulled. At the time of the shooting, Staff Sgt. McCaffery's son and two others under the age of 18 were in the house. No one was injured and no charges have been laid.
