An official with the Tory premier's office down played the get-together as a “courtesy meeting,” but the two leaders from different political stripes both share the common goal of dethroning Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Since last October, Mr. Williams has openly campaigned against Mr. Harper, repeatedly charging that the prime minister broke a promise when he introduced a new equalization formula that penalizes the province's energy revenues.
But Mr. Harper has denied breaking any promise because Newfoundland still has the option of sticking with the principles of the Atlantic Accord, a federal-provincial agreement that protects the province from equalization clawbacks until at least 2012.
