Police officers smashed the window of a red minivan parked downtown Friday to take custody of two young children, authorities said.

The red Chevrolet minivan was parked on York Street near Sussex Drive at around noon when a parking enforcement officer noticed the children were alone in the locked vehicle.

Paramedics described them as a girl about eight months old and a boy, who appeared to be about 1 1/2 years old.

Police and emergency crews removed two children from a locked vehicle yesterday afternoon on York Street in downtown Ottawa. The young children, said to be about eight months old and a year and a half, were unhurt but were taken to hospital.
