Accused sex-doll thief 'left DNA at scene'

Police have arrested a man accused of breaking into a string of north Queensland adult shops and having sex with blow-up dolls.

The 23-year-old Manunda man, whose name has been withheld, was charged yesterday with breaking into businesses in Cairns's CBD, including the Laneway Adult Shop off Spence Street three times in the past month.

He also allegedly smashed his way through the roof into the Sapphire Tapas Bar on Lake Street.

The owner of the Laneway Adult Shop told The Cairns Post after the first break-in the thief had stolen five dolls and had sex with one of them.

"He has been taking the dolls out the back and blowing them up and using the dolls and leaving them in the alley," the shop owner said.

"It is totally bizarre."

The shop owner said he was dumbfounded the doll-snatcher also had the "weird" habit of cleaning up the mess he made after breaking into the building.

The man, who was apprehended at a residence in Manunda, left his DNA on one doll and his fingerprints on three other dolls and lubricants.

He was charged with four counts each of entering premises with intent and one count of attempted break-in.

The man was granted bail and will appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on February 5.
