Quebec Court Judge Claude Parent has hockey legend Guy Lafleur to stand
trial on a charge of giving contradictory evidence.
The judge said police
should have summoned Mr. Lafleur rather than issuing warrant for arrest, but
this minor abuse doesn't justify throwing out the case.
His trial has been scheduled for April 16 and 17.
Last week, Mr. Lafleur's son Mark was given a 15-month suspended
sentence, three years' probation, and 24-hour house arrest for six months
after pleading guilty to 14 charges including assault, forcible confinement
and uttering death threats.
Mr. Lafleur originally agreed to supervise his son Mark after he was awarded
bail and to ensure he abided by a court-ordered curfew.
It was later revealed the elder Lafleur actually drove his son to a hotel so
he could spend time with a girlfriend. Months later a warrant was issued for the
Montreal hockey icon, causing a media frenzy after headlines announced he was a
wanted man.
Mr. Lafleur has launched a $3.5-million civil suit against the police and the
Crown over the warrant because he believes it violated his rights and humiliated
him.
