A one-year-old who survived an eight-storey fall yesterday after wriggling out of his mother's arms is being heralded as a "miracle" child.

The boy, who neighbours say is named Adam, suffered a broken nose and scratches after landing in a lilac bush outside his family's Mississauga apartment building.

"It's a miracle," said neighbour Sam Russo.

The child's condition is stable, police said. They have determined no foul play was involved.

"I heard a baby cry for about three minutes before I heard a blood curdling (woman's) scream, over and over," said Norma Paille, who lives nearby. "People should back away from the edges of a balcony."

The baby's mother takes "a lot of care" with him, said eighth-floor neighbour Ana Herrera. "I'm very surprised this happened to her."
