Ontario Provincial Police have charged a Rockland woman after a three-month-old baby was left unattended in a vehicle on Monday.

A passerby, alerted by the baby's cries around noon, found the infant girl in a vehicle outside the Jean Coutu in Rockland. That woman said the baby was strapped into her car seat, and was dripping with sweat. The car was unlocked and the passerby removed the baby. She said she was confronted by the mother after about five minutes.

At the time of the incident, the temperature was above 40 C with the humidex. The passerby handed the baby back to the mother and called police with a licence plate number after the woman and child had left the scene.

A 25-year-old woman faces charges of abandoning a child and failure to provide the necessities of life to a child. She has been released on a promise to appear in L'Orignal court on Sept. 30.
