An Ottawa police officer will appear in court next month to face charges of impaired driving.

Police say shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Sunday a man was stopped and arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Police later identified the driver as off-duty officer Const. David Dubois of the Ottawa Police Service.

Police charged Dubois with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and he was released on a promise to appear in court on May 4.

The Ottawa police service professional standards section has begun an investigation, and more charges could be laid under the Police Services Act.

Dubois has been reassigned to administrative duties in the meantime.
