Ashley White spared jail time for 2010 stabbing of soldier boyfriend

A 26-year-old woman convicted of stabbing her Afghanistan war vet boyfriend in the chest was handed a suspended sentence by a judge Thursday.

Justice Lynn Ratushny spared the Ottawa woman jail time and instead placed her on probation for two years for the July 2010 domestic incident. The steak knife used in the stabbing on the 36-year-old boyfriend, Patrick Halcro, pierced his lung.

White was charged with attempted murder, but a jury found her guilty of the lesser offence of aggravated assault.

“You are a good, young person who made a serious mistake,” Ratushny told the woman and her several supporters who filled the courtroom Thursday.

The court heard Halcro and White had been drinking when they became embroiled in a fight at their home. Halcro hit White in the face twice, knocking her to the ground.

While he was in the hallway of their apartment building after the attack, White came running out with a knife and stabbed him once in the chest.

The judge said White acted, “impulsively, hysterically, and spontaneously in a complete outrage,” but incarceration would be a “disproportionately harsh sentence.”

Crown prosecutor Carl Lem had asked for a yeah in jail and two years probation.

White must report to a probation officer when required, abide by a curfew in the first year of probation, abstain from alcohol, and provide a DNA sample as part of her probation conditions.

Ratushny also raised questions as to why Halcro — who attended the sentencing — was never charged. “On the facts before me however, his conduct can only be characterized as criminal in nature and also vicious and appalling.”

But, she conceded that it wasn’t the purpose of the proceeding to explore the issue.

White’s lawyer, Israel Gencher, agreed.

“Given the facts even as he put them out, I was surprised to see him today,” said Gencher outside the courthouse Thursday. “He’s not someone I would think would be proud to be walking into that courtroom.”

He said White was feeling relieved at the the judge’s “well-reasoned” and “appropriate” sentence.

“She’s going to need some time I digest this. She’s been living this nightmare for four years,” he said. “That’s an extended period of time.”

It is AMAZING how the Ottawa Police can "choose sides" and then choose to charge a victim rather than the perpetrator.

If there was ANY objectivity, or impartiality in this case, the Police could have, and should have charged both.

The evidence in this case indicates that the Police knew both had committed offenses and there was sufficient evidence upon which to lay a charge.

The police don't admit making mistakes, they simply FABRICATE or refuse to provide disclosure or economically destroy those they don't like.

It makes you want to tear up your Canadian Flag and vomit when you see

an Ottawa Cop.

Another example of police corruption in charging in this case a woman and NOT additionally charging the male who it appears did engage in a vicious assault and the news articles don't tell us if SHE provoked him but claim, HE provoked her.
